Frequently Asked Questions.

What exactly is a Hackathon or a "hack"?"Hackathons are technology-focused events that bring together creative thinkers working in teams to submit a “hack.” This “hack” can be built through the use of programming, engineering, or design-thinking, created to satisfy a specific theme. You can build anything you want. An app, a robot, a website. The only limit is your imagination! The main goal of a Hackathon is to challenge participants to use their creativity and prior knowledge to innovate a solution. For more detailed information about potential "hacks" you can pursue, open the Hacker Guide (link located in the Resources Pages of this website). To add a new question go to app settings and press "Manage Questions" button.

Why should I participate in this Hackathon? This hackathon is an amazing learning opportunity for those of you who want hands-on experience with technology. - If you intend to join another hackathon in the future (we recommend it!!!), this school-wide hackathon is the perfect stepping stone into this environment. Large hackathons can be stressful. Starting small is the perfect opportunity to get comfortable with the setup (especially because the structure of this event was based largely on other Hackathons we participated in). - If you don’t intend to join another Hackathon, this school-wide event is the perfect way for you to take part in the hackathon experience in a low-stress, low-stakes environment and still have the event to put on your resume. Which brings us to our next point: - Whether you create a great hack that you want to show off or just want to say you participated in the event, being a part of this Hackathon is a great thing to put on your college applications to show colleges your interest in the STEM field!
-
I am an absolute beginner and have no coding experience. Can I still join?HackSpartan is completely open to beginners! This Hackathon was built for the purpose of sharing the opportunities available in the STEM field with people like yourself, and as such, we are accepting hacks of all difficulty levels. Hacks are judged based on the difficulty relative to those that created it, so if all other aspects of your project impress the judges, you have just as much a chance of winning as an experienced coder.
-
Do I need to be part of a team? While we encourage you to try finding a team in the #find-your-team channel of the Discord/Slack server, if you are unable to do so, you are MORE than welcome to submit a hack on your own. Teams can be up to 4 people.
-
What kind of time commitment does the event require? The hackathon will run from Saturday morning to Sunday morning (April 24th to April 25th), with the closing ceremony and winner announcements on Sunday afternoon!
-
Where is this Hackathon taking place?Due to Covid-19 restrictions, this event is going to be completely virtual with all communication occuring through Google Meets, Discord, and Devpost. These links and resources will all be provided as we get closer to the event date.
-
Do I have to work on my hack for the entirety of the event? No! While the term 24-hour Hackathon may seem intimidating, you are absolutely NOT required to stay glued to your computer for the entirety of that period. Feel free to eat, sleep, and return to your hack as you see fit.
-
How can I register to participate in HackSpartan?Click the Register button in the menu of this website and fill out the Google Form.
-
How many challenges can I submit my hack to?Please choose only one HackSpartan theme. If you use echoAR technology, you may submit to both the echoAR challenge as well as our own. Even though HackSpartan is offering two different themes this year, prizes will be awarded on a basis of best hack overall. There is only first, second, and third place prizes for the overall event and not for the themes specifically. However, coordinating with your theme IS a subcategory within judging. The additional theme was provided based on feedback we received from our previous event about wanting more freedom to pursue your ideas.
